There are really no words to describe the phenomena Pamala Stanley. With a voice that can encompass the most intimate whisper and the soaring "bel canto" that is surely her trademark, she does it all. Her ebullience and natural warmth connect with every kind of audience. While on tour in South America, she was given her own Christmas Special, based simply on a charisma that knows no boundaries, international or otherwise. Not speaking very much Spanish, she couldn't really tell how she was doing, but "...every time I said something, the audience would laugh. I guess I was the American version of Charo...". Pamala's grandfather, was multitalented, playing any string instrument set before him. He turned down a Hollywood career to stay with her grandmother. Her mother, the major influence in the family, was a singer, and her sisters Sandra Young and Robin Rogers are both well known singers in the Houston, Texas area. Her brother is renowned, James Lee Stanley, recording artist in Hollywood, CA as well as a writer and producer, owning his own record company, Beachwood Records. Pamala was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and began singing with her brother (James) and sister (Sandra) by the time she was six. At age ten, she was recording for Frank Guida on the label that launched Gary US Bonds and Jimmy Soul. After high school, Pamala, Chris (her husband at that time), and Annabelle and Dennis Doughty opened one of the largest nightclubs in Tidewater, Virginia, the Fifth National Banque. Pamala and Sandra formed the Fifth National Band, which became the most popular local band in the area drawing thousands of fans over a five year span that included tours up and down the East Coast. By the late seventies, Pamala was in New York singing commercials, the best known of which was for Schlitz. She then flew to Germany and recorded the world wide dance hit, "This Is Hot", for EMI and did extensive touring in northern Europe and taped many national television shows in Germany, Holland, Ecuador and the United States, including Dance Fever. She was a favorite on the hit Canadian show Michele Gasmin's Talk Show. When she returned from her world wind touring she and her husband Frank produced and released "I Don't Want To Talk About It", written by her brother, James, and it went solid Top Twenty on the Billboard Dance Charts. Amazing, considering the label was Pamala and Frank's own Kommander Records and that this was their first release. They next produced the now classic "Coming Out Of Hiding", also written by her brother James. Released on TSR Records, it went Top Four for the year on the same Billboard charts, received extensive video play on many major video programs including MTV, and was nominated for Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Best Female vocalist, alongside the like of Tina Turner and Madonna. She followed that with the release of "If Looks Could Kill", which found its way into the Arnold Schwarzenegger film "Raw Deal", which also went Top Twenty on those same charts. Pamala has been touring since the early 1980's. She has been seen singing with some of the most recognized names in music; Bette Midler, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Natalie Cole and Frank Sinatra just to name a few. Known internationally, she has done shows in Canada, Europe, South America, the Far East. You might remember Pamala doing MTV or one of several prime time TV specials. She also did various nationally televised parades, including Foley's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Fort Lauderdale's "Winterfest" boat parade, which won her best entertainer two years in a row, as well as opening an L.A. Rams/ New Orleans Saints game with the star spangled banner. During a stay in Las Vegas singing at the Las Vegas Hilton, Pamala was invited to open a restaurant on Fort Lauderdale Beach called Evangeline. She had been seen by the owner during one of her shows. After doing her own show for a year, Pamala gradually pieced together her own band. For the following four years they became quite famous in the local area for their New Orleans Jazz, Swing and Boogie Woogie style. They spent a year at Christines in Jupiter and then rattled the rafters at O'Hara's Pub in Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. Early in 1994 Pamala decided to once again return to being a soloist. She sang and played piano at the Riverside Hotel in The Grill Room. Taking time off from the band has given her more time to write and record. She has completed a jazz classics CD entitled "All In The Game" with songs from the 30's and 40's. A soon to be released comic strip, musical, CD and book written by James Lee Stanley entitled "Sex and the Single Mom". She is currently working on a CD of originals and blues pop. Her dance career is back with a new release of "Coming Out Of Hiding" and brand new single soon to be released "Clear Skies." The latest project is the long awaited Broadway CD with Pamala's favorite songs from Broadway which she began October 2002. All of Pamala's music can be purchsed at this website on the CD and Songs page. Keep posted for more info on current projects. |
