Levitation

Composing is such a magical process. I find that when a tune works, it almost seems to write itself (as cliché as that may sound). As I gathered together the material I'd been writing for this recording, one thing seemed pretty clear. All the melodies begged to be played on the saxophone.
The decision to call Kirk was an easy one. We were at Humber College together (it seems like a million years ago), and I'm awed by the incredible force he's become on the instrument. He's also got a heart of gold, and I cannot say enough about his work on this recording. "My Guys" on bass and drums are Kieran and Barry. We've been a team for several years now, and playing with them always feels like wearing a comfortable old shoe (but a shoe that kicks butt!).
This past summer the four of us played a bunch of gigs, and from day one it felt like a band. Recording can be a magical process, too. This one is my third release as leader, and the decision to record more of my own compositions was both a natural and a conscious one. On a good night, playing my own music with musicians like these guys is as close to levitating as it gets.
