"Fasten your seat belts! Mordy Ferber is loose! Though I've not previously heard the estimable Mr. Ferber, from the evidence presented here, he emerges as a powerful contemporary guitarist with an attitude, energy and pluck all his own. And with a batch of riveting originals and plenty of zing per string, Ferber is clearly his own man. "Ferber's forays are set aside by an incendiary cast featuring keyboardist Brad Hartfield, bassist Eddie Gomez, drummer Jack DeJohnette, percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and saxophonists George Garzone and Dave Liebman on soprano. The title track is an electric glide in blue. For contrast there's the contemplative 'Zipora' and the poignant 'A Minor Tune' with Ferber's edgy classical guitar. Back on the wild side, Ferber's lightning-lit 'Formerly With No One' launches Liebman's serpentine soprano, Gomez's raw virtuosic flights and the leader's postmodern sturm und drang, DeJohnette-stoked firestorms. Then, there's the jaunty electro-waltz, 'Fred Astaire In Chicago.' It's all great!" |
