Bringin' Out The Beast - Songs By John Meyer

Born in Manhattan, expelled from Dalton, tolerated Fieldston, deserted University of Chicago after two years to bum around Europe. Played piano in a coffee bar in the Haymarket (London) returned to place original comedy number -Mr. Clean- in Julius Monk revue, Pieces of Eight. Sung by Jane Connell, in love with a detergent. Created a small sensation that season.
Was offered job as copywriter at BBD&O. Found the atmosphere, and the mentality, stultifying, so I quit to make an itinerant living behind the keyboard, playing and singing the songs I love, Gershwin, Frank Loesser, Vernon Duke, Harry Warren. I was given the opportunity to entertain in France (St. Tropez), aboard the QE2, and on a luxury train (where I accompanied a passenger who turned out to be Wynton Marsalis). Tailored special lyrics for noted performers: Gloria Dehaven, Julie Wilson, Madeline Kahn, Eartha Kitt.
Spectacular romances with extraordinary ladies, all singers: Betty Rhodes, Margaret Whiting, Leila Martin. Wrote a movie with director Paul Bartel, Not for Publication (1984), put in a musical number, You Bring Out the Beast In Me. Also with Paul an episode of Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories called Gershwin's Trunk -Spielberg loved it. Wrote Book, Music & Lyrics for original musical, a Film Noir pastiche, The Betrayal of Nora Blake (1998) -produced it in London at the tiny Jermyn Street Theatre with Bobbie Horowitz.
My proudest moment, hearing those laughs, crying at my own music, what an experience. We got raves. 2006 I re-issued my Garland memoir, Heartbreaker, with a CD of a private rehearsal I did at the piano with Judy singing and telling three wonderful stories. Continue to do speaking engagements about this book, complete with piano and songs. 2010 Currently mounting a reading of my comedy-thriller, Zazou. Joined by my new wife, Suzanne, who is glamorous, articulate, and funny. We're also producing a CD of my songs, New Classics, performed by some incredible singers; Margaret Whiting, Judy Garland, Chuck Cooper, Janis Siegel.
