I have spent much of the past year delving into the very rich French Songbook. My curiosity stemmed from the influence this vast body of material has had on the American singer. I've always been a big fan of Jacques Brel and knew many of the lush movie themes written by Michel Legrand, but this journey brought me the gifts of Charles Aznavour (widely considered to be the "Sinatra" of France) and Gilbert Becaud, among others. Most French songwriters are poets and each song felt like a one act play I have so many people to thank for making this recording a reality: first and foremost, Brian Lane Green, my dear friend, who came up with the idea of "Chanteur" and masterfully guided me through the songbook. His only prerequisite was that I would be willing to navigate depths of truth in my performance that I never dared to travel before. I hope I've done him proud - I think I have. John Boswell for his always brilliant arrangements. I'm so glad that he "gets me" musically David Boswell for his luscious guitar and Gabe Moffat for his golden ears and warm heart. I could not have completed this recording without the guidance and patience of my French coaches, Jerome Bortaud, Edouard Collins and Louise Pitre - merci beaucoup! Thank you for all of your coaching and patience. Mark Williams for his constant encouragement and for seeing a goodness in me that I hope one day to achieve. You make it all worthwhile. To my family for their constant belief in me. To get to do what I love so much is a blessing and one that amazes me on a daily basis. I hope you enjoy this journey into the Great French Songbook. |
