While recent years have given Della Reese a new kind of household recognition by virtue of her starring role in the hit television show Touched By An Angel, her musical legacy reaches back over four glorious decades. Long before she graced the small screen, the Detroit-horn entertainer was a recording artist of stature although record companies have been slow in re-issuing Della’s voluminous work, her success as a television star has re-ignited interest in the pop, jazz, blues and soul music she made in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Her musical roots - like that of so many other legendary singers and performers -   

were firmly based in gospel. In 1954, she began her recording career by signing a contract with Jubilee records. It took a while for Della’s music to kick in with the public but by 1957, she had finally made it to the upper reaches of the pop charts.
