The Nearness Of You

For me, the memory and melodies of Hoagy Carmichael are always near, literally. As a native Hoosier, Hoagy's songs have been an integral part of my musical heritage.
Hoagland Howard Carmichael (November 22, 1899 - December 27, 1981) was one of the most prolific of America's songwriters. Many of his songs are now considered jazz standards. "Stardust", "Georgia On My Mind", "The Nearness of You", and "Heart and Soul", are four of the most-recorded American songs of all time.
Even today, Hoagy's music reflects the sensibilities of a Hoosier: "folksy charm" mixed with sophistication-and always accessible. is themes are universal, often representing a sense of longing: a longing for love, for a simpler life, and for home.
It is hard to believe that Hoagy's writing began in the 20's in the very beginnings of the jazz age. Hoagy asked, "Are the tunes of the twenties classics because they are old? Or because they are often still fresh, strong and real? The classic babies had once been moderns. "
We have assembled some of the finest present-day jazz musicians for this tribute to Hoagy's music. It our hope that this recording will not only honor Hoagy's "classics" but will prove that his music is indeed still "fresh, strong, and real."
